The 7 New Features of the iPhone 14 | Bayelon

iphone 14 new features

The next iPhone generation was officially unveiled by Apple on Wednesday night. Recently, the alterations have frequently been negligible, making it difficult to tell the new models from from their predecessors.

The iPhones that Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, unveiled on Wednesday night were noticeably different from those of prior years, but only for part of the new iPhones. Additionally, a ground-breaking new function has been added to all new iPhones.

1) No more iPhone mini

In total, Apple has introduced 4 new iPhone models: 2 Pro versions and 2 standard models. As for the non-Pro versions, the small iPhone mini has been retired and replaced by the much larger iPhone 14 Plus.

This means that the current iPhones are only available in 2 different sizes:

  • iPhone 14 6.1 inch
  • iPhone 14 Plus 6.7 inch
  • iPhone 14 Pro 6.1 inch
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max 6.7 inch

2) Bye Notch, Hello "Dynamic Island"

The gradation between the Pro and non-Pro models is even clearer with the new iPhone generation. Because the standard devices - iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus - are still characterized by the wide bar notch, while the Pro versions come with the new, more space-saving display cut-out, which Apple calls "Dynamic Island".

Basically, it's a standard camera hole that hides the selfie camera and Face ID sensors. However, Apple has managed to equip the camera hole with additional functions, blurring the line between software and hardware.

The so-called Dynamic Island adapts to notifications and harmonises with their display. If you receive a notification, for example, the display cut-out appears to be enlarged and integrated into the notification display so that it is practically invisible.

3) Camera improvements

When it comes to the camera, the gap between the two model categories has increased again. The non-Pro versions still come with 2 camera lenses: 12 MP main camera and 12 MP wide-angle. The Pro models have an additional lens with 3x optical zoom.

Furthermore, the resolution of the main camera has only been increased from 12 to 48 MP in the Pro versions. The sensor size has also been increased by 65 percent compared to the previous model, which should lead to better results, especially in poor lighting conditions.

Apple has introduced a new stabilization feature for video recording. It is designed to prevent camera shake and deliver gimbal-like clips. The so-called "Action Mode" is available on all 4 new iPhones.

Ā 4) Always on display

SOS function by satellite

For the first time, the new iPhones will also have an always-on display. Notifications and even the wallpaper are displayed permanently without having to activate the iPhone. However, this function is also reserved for the two Pro models, as is the adaptive refresh rate between 1 and 120 Hz.

Speaking of the display, the new Pro models also have a revised and improved OLED screen surrounded by narrower bezels. Apple specifies the brightness as 1600 nits. The peak brightness is even 2000 nits. The iPhone 14 Pro outshines all other smartphone displays - at least on paper.

5) SOS function by satellite

Also new: an emergency function where help can be obtained via satellite. Cell phone reception is not necessary. This is made possible by connecting the iPhone directly to a satellite.

However, the users have to align the mobile phone accordingly. The iPhone shows you where the satellite is and how to hold your cell phone. A text message is then sent to friends or directly to the emergency services.

The feature will launch in November in the US and Canada and will be free on the iPhone 14 for 2 years. It is still unclear when the function will come to Austria. There is also no information on how much this SOS function should cost.

Automatic accident detection is also new. If the iPhone thinks you're involved in a car accident, emergency services can be notified automatically. Both satellite and accident features are available on all new iPhone models.

6) New chip and eSIM only

The two Pro iPhones are powered by the new A16 Bionic chip. This should be significantly more powerful and at the same time consume less energy. The two standard devices have integrated the A15 Bionic processor from the previous year.

In the US, all 4 new iPhone models are sold without a traditional SIM card tray. This means that all new iPhones are eSIM-only. A big step that other smartphone manufacturers will probably follow.

7) The prices

A small disappointment at the end: The new iPhones have made a significant jump in price - at least as far as the euro prices are concerned. The standard model iPhone 14 is exactly 100 euros more expensive than the comparison model from the previous year. The iPhone 14 Pro costs 150 euros more and the iPhone 14 Pro Max has increased in price by 200 euros.

  • iPhone $14: 999
  • iPhone $14 Plus: $1,149
  • iPhoneĀ  $14 Pro: $1,299
  • iPhoneĀ  $14 Pro Max: $1,449
